- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- Every now and then someone posts a question like: "How far can I talk on an
- HT?". There's lots of "ifs, ands or buts" in the answer to this question,
- but here's a useful little rule of thumb: The distance to the "radio
- horizon" is the square root of twice the antenna height in feet. This
- represents the maximum line of sight distance over flat ground; terrain,
- buildings, etc. will limit coverage further, so the calculated value
- represents a best-case maximum for line-of-sight contact. At 2 meters and
- below, there is significant knife-edge diffraction, so you can frequently
- maintain contact "over the horizon", but it gets spotty. At UHF and higher,
- the SQRT(2H) formula works pretty well as a maximum. The formula is based
- on the "4/3 earth" model which accounts for atmospheric refraction.

- Russ, my guess is that the interference is being radiated from the com-
- puter or monitor to the antenna or feed line. The cheapest thing to
- do might be to separate the computer from the feedline and antenna as
- much a possible. Have you tried turning off only the monitor to see
- if the noise subsides? I know from some past experience that monitors
- can generate a lot of noise, but sometimes only when there is a
- certain type of picture on the screen, making it seem like both the com-
- puter and monitor are actually generating the noise (since the computer
- is what puts the picture on the screen). If you decide to build a
- shielded box, you don't need to use lead. Aluminum will probably work
- fine, as might a metallic screen mesh, or even some al. foil, at least
- at first to see if it has any effect. Also consider the possibility
- of radiation from the cables interconnecting the computer and monitor.
- Make it as short as possible, or at least coil up the slack tightly.
- If you suspect that the radiation is getting directly into the radio,
- you can disconnect the feedline and see if the noise persists. If
- the noise disappears when you disconnect the line, then its coming
- from the line or antenna. You could also leave the line connected to
- the rig and disconnect the antenna and see what happens.
-
- Good luck.

- Anyone ever tried to get a manual out of MFJ? About six weeks ago I
- called their 800 number and inquired about getting copies of two manuals

- filter. I talked to a very helpful-sounding person, who took my name and
- address and informed me they would be sent free of charge, along with a
- copy of their current catalog. That was nice to hear, obviously, since I
- had said I would pay for them.
-
- After four weeks, having received nothing, I followed up with a letter by
- fax mail, again offering to pay. That was two weeks ago; still nothing
- heard.
-
- Is this typical of MFJ, or should I try again?

- Subject: Repeater Help - Cary IL. area
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I really need help. I have recently purchased a radio and
- don't really know what I am doing. It seems like I have
- a basic understanding of using a repeater; but, am not having
- any success. A friend gave me a copy of a repeater guide and
- I think I understand how to use it but could not even once access
- the repeater. I spent a whole battery before I even got one contact.
- Also I hear people talking but I am always afraid to jump in and don't
- really know how to jump in without steping on someones toes.
-
- Example:
-
- In this book it stated that a repeater was location was Crystal Lake, IL.
- The frequency was Output 146.055 with input +600KHz. So I set up my YT-470
- to listen on 146.055 and transmitted on 146.655. Also I forgot that it has
- a CTCSS of 107.2 so I think I set up my CTCSS for 107.2. I listen to 146.055
- on my other radio to see if I could hear me transmit; but, I did not hear a
- thing. I would really like to start talking to someone. The radio can
- transmit since I have hear me transmit using simplex on a frequency and
- listening with my other radio; however, the radios were in the same room.
-
- Could someone help me with this???? I live in Cary, IL and Crystal Lake is
- only about 10 miles max from me. It might be possible that I was transmitting
- at to low of wattage (about 2 watts I think). If anyone lives in this area
- please email me since I would like to talk with you about local repeaters.
-
- Also email me if you have any help for me at:
-
- thweatt@cig.mot.com
- Thanks,
- John

- I am not sure it is illegal but I have heard that the repeaters in Europe use
- a different scheme than we do here. Here we use one pl tone to access a
- repeater, (sub-audible tone that you must have installed in your radio to
- brind up the repeater). This means that a rig made for the US will have to
- have their type of tone encoder installed or you will not have access to their
- repeaters. You also need a operator license for any other country you might
- choose to use it in. We do have reciprocating agreements with other countries
- so many times you only need to notify that country and apply for a license
- there. Since you are not going to another country, don't worry about his
- question. Maybe he was just curious and wanted to go with you

-
- Well, no. That's not why such covenants are places. That's the reason given,
- but it's not the real reason. Developers place such restrictions on
- new developments because they cut deals with the local cable company. The
- cable company agrees to wire the development for free if the developer agrees
- to put a no-antennas restriction in the covenants. It's done pretty
- universally.
